The Golden Cause and the Environment
If raising money for charity, having a fun night with your friends and making a bit of money wasn’t enough to get you involved, The Golden Cause is also dedicated to environmental sustainability, as we pride ourselves on being one of the largest global recyclers of gold. Here are some tips to share with your clients and guests to help them get their gold out of the jewellery boxes and into the hands of important charities:
- A single gold ring leaves in its wake at least 20 tonnes of mine waste. This waste contains cyanide which is used to separate gold from ore.
- Cyanide pollution is a major concern contaminating our soil and water supplies, causing irreparable damage to the environment and its inhabitants.
- It is estimated that only 125,000 tonnes of gold have been mined the world over since the beginning of time. This equates to about the size of two Olympic swimming pools. This is an expensive and toxic procedure that takes its toll on the environment.
- Between 1995 and 2015 approximately half of the gold produced worldwide has or will come from indigenous peoples’ lands.
- At the end of 2003 only 12.28% of the world’s gold was being recycled with the rest either being worn or sitting unwanted and broken – too valuable to throw away, too expensive to repair.
- Gold will not rust, tarnish or corrode over time and when recycled it retains it’s original purity. If you have unwanted gold lurking in your jewellery box, bring it along to The Golden Cause event and do good with gold.
